I believe it's only illegal if you can't see your lights from a certain distance, here in WA. Mine are "redded" out, but aren't so dark you can't see them. It's more of a safety thing than anything else.

If you do black them out, make sure people can see them from far enough away or you'll have more than a ticket to worry about :)

Moved topic to correct forum.

Mine used to be redded out, but it wore off because I didn't clear coat it. I would be weary about completely blacking them out.

Krylon Stained Glass paint.

You can find it at Michaels or craft stores. After you apply it to your desired dark red, then you should clear coat it, which I didn't so I have to redo them sometime. LOL.

I actually did the red out on a pair of broken 94-97 integra tails. They came out pretty nice. Blacking them out should be the same process. I'm a perfectionist so I took my time and sanded out all the imperfections and little lettering. Then taped up my reverse and sprayed 3 coats of red removed the tape and added 2 coats of clear. It's somewhat of a pain to get them back to OEM glossy look. It takes a lot of fine sanding and buffing.

The people that black out tails use brighter bulbs BTW.

Here is what they looked like when I got done. They are now sold and I have new 94s on again.

if i ever blacked my tails out i would get pulled over right away, the other day in the prelude i got pulled over for one part of my break light beeing out, theres two bulbs in each side and one on one side was out, if both would have been out he wouldent have known the difference. such crap.

Idaho and Washington have their laws online so you can find out if it is legal or not. Where are you located? In Idaho, you must be able to see your brake lights in bright sunlight, from 100' away. I think Washington is the same. Lots of cars and vans have blacked out taillights and I hardly notice. On a black car, it just makes the back end look more tied together. My taillights are huge and inordinately red.

Your brake lights, in Idaho, can be yellow :) You can have a green light that comes on when you touch the gas pedal. :)

Looks good! I've always liked smoked lights, it can make or break the car. I haven't had a chance to do it myself yet though, because on my car's as* the rear light plastic goes all the way across and I always thought it'd look stupid, ha.

Is the far left pic of 509's car the same as the ones on the right? If so DAMN. Sh*t's hot.

I Recommend niteshades spray or eBay precut vinyl. I believe the law in Oregon is they must be visible from 50 yards away but don't quote me on that. I used the vinyl and hey were waaay dark but hardly reduced he light.
