1990 2 door 4runner, 22re 5 spd. AKA. Kurb Killer(dont ask(unless you really want to))
Mostly stock for now, my first priority is to remove the running boards, i just need to convince my super anal mom and step dad to let me modify it. Im turning 17 in december so i hope im in luck!

well if your sixteen i can guess what kurb killer means lol welcome

:lawl:i guess i should tell the story. I was doing some "urban offroading" when i saw this super steep grass hill. I threw it in 4 and went up it no problem of course, untill i got to the top and realised there was a big curb. I hit the transfer case crossmember pretty hard, it just crushed 1 half of it and bent it back about 5 degrees, and needless to say it fucked up the curb.
I will never live this down considering my friend was with me, therefore the runner was dubbed the kurb killer.
oh, and im still running the same t-case mount and crossmember:thumbsup:
Alright, there are some pictures.
i remember being 16 and my mom wouldnt let me touch my car. Such horseshit lol. Now i fuck up cars on a dialy basis for a living :) hahaha. (k i dont really mess them up)
Give it time, they will come around.
I started breaking my mom in by just doing it and seeing how long it was untill she noticed, she would bitch and moan for a few hours, maybe a day or 2, but she got over it :) then pretty soon didnt care any more lol

Yeah it sounds like you were in the same boat. My birthday is on dec. 19th, so im going to say that they dont have to get me anything, just let me modify my Yota. And my parents like contracts, so maybe i will make one of them saying i wont do anything to extream.
Im pretty sure my mom is coming around, when i told her i was going to wheelin with the guys from work she just shrugged, she didnt blow up this time.
you can accidently have someone hit your running boards on both sides, you dont want messed up running boards on there!!
you can accidently have someone hit your running boards on both sides, you dont want messed up running boards on there!!
ahaha! I have thought about that tons of times. My first plan was to break them off when i went to my cabin at snoqualmie and say the ice did it.
But my most recent and best plan should work. I work at Summers Automotive Service, so the other day when i was replacing my clutch slave cylinder i put my runner on the lift for the first time. It barly hit the running boards with the supports adjusted all the way up.
So within the next couple months i will be doing an oil change. Im pretty sure you can see where im going with this:thumbsup:
Oh, i almost forgot the best part. My parents will insist on me getting new ones, so i think i can trick them into getting me a set of sliders!(bars that protect the body from rocks and shit, and they look almost like running boards)
check out http://shrockworks.com/
they have some of the sickest stuff ever!

Good find. They have some sweet stuff, but its a bummer none of it would fit on my 2nd gen. All the bumpers and sliders are 96 or newer 3rd gen rigs.
I suppose i should add that my next set of tires are going to be 32x11.5, my current ones are 31x10.5. The 32s should fit with a little fender trimming, and a little cranking on the tortion bar if needed.
With 32s i can eventually lift it with out it looking totally rediculous, but i will eventually go to 33x12.5.
Oh, and im looking for a set of 15" steelies, preferably black, but i can paint them.

Hey welcome to the site! That rig looks pretty fun.
The previous owner of my car put huge tires on (see my sig), so before I replaced them, I'm sure I could've kept up with you for a little bit! :lawl:

ahh lame. Well you have 2 options. Email him, he can whip you up a set for your 2nd gen for pretty much the same price i think.
Or
Buy em anyways. its not hard to drill a couple holes to make them fit.

I come from a family of gear heads so I cant say I ever had these problems lol. In fact when I got my first car (1980 toyota PUP) my dad helped me do all sorts of $hit to it haha.
Nice 4runner, I have always been a huge fan of them!
Thanks man. I dont have to much trouble with the parents anymore. They dont really care what i do to it anymore. Im just not supposed to go wheeling untill im 18. But i get around that haha.
They arnt even really opposed to the idea of me rattle canning it desert tan this summer.

Haha well that's good. Cars aren't any fun unless you can play with them. Be sure to post up your pics after the lift!

Thanks, Jeff at Badland Bumpers custom makes this stuff. He did a great job on it. I should be getting the front bumper this summer.

I agree, im addicted any forms of modification, i think i have a problem:out:
And i will defanitly be sure to get them up asap.
Hey guys, back from the dead...again.
Not much progress on anything. Sold the small lift, but for a good reason!
Senior project next year, im going to be throwing a 4.3 vortec v6 in place of my 22re. So i will have to do a 4 inch lift to clear the front diff.
Would rather do a solid axle swap, but dont have THAT much money.

Looks like a fun vehicle.
I remember right before I turned 16 and was about to get my license I wanted to buy a '93 Sentra from a friend but my parents wouldn't let me.
A few days later it was in my driveway-
"So why's that car in our driveway?"
"Oh... It's mine."
Haha. F*ck it, bought it anyway man. Good times.
Well I have started gathering parts for the 4.3 vortec swap.
Got a set of landcruiser coils to lift the rear.
And probably within the week i should be pulling a 97 CPI 4.3 vortec from a buddies friends blazer.
Still got lots of parts collecting to go. But i need to make more money first lol

Aw dont swap a Domestic into it. Get a 2L-TE Hilux Motor.....
Hehehe to bad:dita:
Next truck i get is going to get a 5vzfe (toyota 3.4 v6) so that i can compare the 4.3 and the 3.4.
Atleast i aint throwin a v8 in it:crazy:

What are your intentions with the 4 runner? Looks? Crawling? Mudding? Trails?
Mostly trails and crawling. Im not to into the mud thing, but im not scared to hit it. As for looks, its gonna be dented, scraped, crunched, and beat to hell someday:D
gotrice93
07-26-2010, 09:22 PM
Why go with a v-6 if you are looking at trails. Crawling is all about gearing. All of the trucks I go with are 4 cylinders because they are lighter. Granted we do a lot more snow crawling since it's montana. If I was in your position I would work more on getting a dual transfer case setup. just my opinion.
That is true, but you cant deny that its nice to have the power when you need it.
22re is just worn out, so replacing it with something different. I will own many trucks in the future, so its all a big experiment.
And i drive to the trails and junk, so its going to be nice to have a little more power to turn those tires and not have to drop it into 3rd on the freeway.
But like i said, its all a big experiment. Next truck i get will get a 3.4 dropped in it. And the truck after that, maybe a diesel.
Oh and its not like i will have v8 power:P I will be putting down like 215.
So a little more weight than the 22re, but more power to make up for that. It will have oodles of torque too!

Yeah, my friend runs 22re and loves the motor to death. He mainly likes it because it only has like 90 hp. Doesn't have to worry about spinning out.
40 inch tires with only like a 4 inch lift=lots of fender trimming
http://c3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/74/l_2ab4d27c264c4801851ba2c5f24df486.jpg
Yeah its definatly one of my favorite motors. so damn reliable.
He has fender flares on that rig so he probably drives it on the road?
I bet that thing is a dog even if he has 5.71s haha.
Awesome looking truck though, dont see many setups like that, 40s on such a small lift.

He drives it to the places he wheels at. It is only like 3 miles from his house. He says it drives fine doing 65 when he takes it to get wheels balanced or something where he has to go to town. The cops are pretty strict around here about mud flaps and fender flares. He loves his bushwackers though, he has a couple with zip ties. He says they are super strong and has used them to support his truck against trees and whatnot. IDK what gears he is running. Just remember him telling me he has like 24 forwards gears and 5 reverse gears with his dual transfer cases.
That sounds like an awesome truck, i dont plan on ever having to trailer my rig to go wheeling either. I like to keep it a truck, not a damn buggy haha

He trailers anything over 20-30 miles just so if he breaks something while wheeling he has a way out. But most of his wheeling is around by his house.

bet you would like my buddy toms 4runner, here is a pic after he just finished the paint.

Oh hey he is on YotaTech. He did a great rattle can job, turned out really clean.
oh and i just got my cb hooked up again. Havent had one since i got my rear bumper, but its up and running again.
This 4 foot firestick is way better than that fiberglass whip i had was. Picking up truckers from i5 from my house.
Tomorrow i should be picking up a new tranny, t-case, and the adapter for the trans to the 4.3.
I decided to swap transmissions because i THOUGHT i had a w56, but turns out a have a g58 (light duty version of the w56).
So i will be swapping in this r150 (toyota 3.0 v6 trans) and the chain driven t-case. I would rather have a gear driven one, but it will have to do.
The best part, im getting like 800+ dollars of stuff for a nice low price of 500 bones:D The adapter alone is 455 bucks.
Hopefully the trans is as good as they say it is.
Got the tranny and junk. Long drive, but totally worth it!

Got my motor. I will clean it up later this week. Pulling off all the wiring and junk to make it easier to deal with, and will start hacking off useless parts of the wiring harness.
It has ac too, but i dont need it, so i will make it into an onboard air system sometime after the swap.
Anyone want to loan me some money!?:D

Just a warning, the ac does work great for an on board air system. They are also simple to set up but, they are know to burn up pretty quick because of the amount of stress put on them, and they don't get lubricated since no oil is going through it like there would be if it was used as an ac.
Ah thanks man, good to know:thumbsup:

Next truck i get is going to get a 5vzfe (toyota 3.4 v6) so that i can compare the 4.3 and the 3.4.
Atleast i aint throwin a v8 in it:crazy:
3.4 is a lot better....and you could have thrown a 1UZ in it ;)
starting from the 22re you could have put a 7MGE in it rather easily
4.3 has more power, and buttloads more torque. 1uz is overkill for my daily driver ifs 4runner. And i was planning on a 7mge, but it makes its power at high rpms. If i ever make a prerunner, a 7mgte will be going in:D
I thought about the 3.4, but i wanted to do something different, 3.4 has been done so many times. AND i got an awesome deal on this 4.3.
It may not last as long as a yota, but it is still a good motor.
Got a 3.0 v6 radiator. Pretty much bolted right in, and as of right now, its the nicest looking part on my 4runner:lawl:

My girlfriend decided she wanted to help by painting something. I had her paint the fan shroud to keep her busy. She decided bright red was a good color.

Yes....but compare the entire power curves to your 22re, you aren't losing anything but an anchor LOL 4.3 works, not bad just isn't toyota..i'm a bit bias
Ooohhh...were'd you get the AL radiator?

Stay away from 7m's get a 2jzge instead. There is a complete set up on Supramania for 600 right now. No rodknock no BHG can go NA-T with out problems and will run forever.
And fuck the 3.4 liter the newer 4.0 liter is better. this is my daily

65 down gravel roads FTW , and I can tow my Supra to the Dyno
Almost done with the 4.3 swap. Heres the link to my build thread. Anyone wanna race?:cornut:

Oh dude you have no idea! I would kill for a datsun 510 with a boosted l20!
I love both cars and trucks. Im just waiting untill i move out to get something fast and low. My parents dont want any more cars in the driveway.
Been driving a pathfinder so i totally for got about the clutch safety switch:crazy:
Runs great. Primed the fuel pump so many times when we were scanning it that it started right up.
