View Full Version : is it illegal to drive with a broken headlight?

so, in the process of replacing my headlights with some new ones i had bought, i ended up breaking the cover off of my right one. i wont be able to get another cover for a day or two and im not going to drive it at night, but i was curious if its illegal to drive it during the day like that? im in wa.

don't quote this too hard, but you should be okay if the light works... missing cover should not be an issue

don't see a problem as far as legality goes. Getting water inside where the bulb is, should be your only problem.
If your not going to drive at night, I would remove the light bulb and wrap the connector up water tight so you don't short anything out

I second that.
Also sooooommmeeetiiiiimmmmeeeessssss cops'll let it slide and not bother you because most people know they have a headlight out. If they do bug you sometimes you'll just get a fix it ticket, or none at all if you tell them you've got one coming in.
BUT, that's generally from experience, not WA specific, sorry, ha.

yeah hopefully it will be just a day or two. no night driving cause its blinding other cars lol.

technically probably on the edge of legality, cause IIRC legally the light just has to work...but you already said you wont drive it at night so at worst if you're questioned you tell the truth and get a fix it ticket which by the time you go in the light will be fixed.
