ok i just copied and pasted this from ss.net cause those guys are mostly v8 guys, but i figure i can get some advise from the fella here at home

so long story short, when i was 17 i had an 83 ford e-150. lent it to a friend for 6-7 months. got it back and it was running funny. it sat for another year. i got it running ok to move it to a friends field to park it. 4 years later i just remembered i own the van and for the last couple months ive been looking for a reliable car, so i figured id just get this running again. specs its a 302, or 305, whatever idk, ive never worked ona ford or a v8. carbed of course. 4 speed auto. had a rebuilt carb and engine before i bought it from my dad 5 years ago. i think an RV cam? whatever that means. and a recently rebuilt clutch (5 years ago). it wasnt shifting right and having a hard time starting 3 years ago when i got it back from my friend. i think starting issues was an electrical short. so for the shifting i checked to see if it had fluid in the tranny. pulled the dipstick and it was filled to the top of the dipstick! WTF. so heres my question. where do i start to get the engine running. drain fuel tank, new filter, new fluids all around, check spark. how do i clear out the fuel line just crank it? carb rebuild? spark, distributor im sure. also, would having all that atf in the tranny cause damage or can i just drain it and fill it properly? thanks in advance for any input!

it hasnt ran more than 5 minutes in 4 years. im gonna have to flush the fuel system and if i remember right someone stole the gas cap so there hasnt been one on it since then either

Give it a flush, then put some fresh gas in it and a lil in the carb and crank away.

so i was tinkering today. i remembered that the battery would go dead. so today i messed with the electrical. heres the scoop. all running lights work. when i hit the brakes one get brighter as its suppose to and one dies out completely. high beams dont turn back and forth. one headlight is brighter than the other. i have no clue were the fuses might be but i saw two inline fuses under the hood that look "custom" one was hot, pulled it, all lights go out. so im guessing theres a short somewere and the current has nowhere to go. and i remembered the other one was for the engine. i pulled it once putting a stereo in it and the engine died. also i notice my park brake light wasnt coming on nor was the highbeam light. all gauges work and it was too bright to see if the backlighting works. any ideas on where to start? im gonna have a look see in the manual today and see what i come up with as far as a "fuse box"

Maybe a bad ground? I have seen some crazy stuff happen from a bad ground. Could be corroded or something.

i would assume so, but isnt there a way to check for that instead of inspecting 100 grounds

check the grounds around the lights. If you are noticing problems with the lights being brighter.

could missing bulbs be a problem? idk if those old wiring systems run parallel or series. cause im missing two bulbs from my rear plate thing. theres nowhere to put them, the old plastic has fallen apart

Missing bulbs in the plate light shouldn't matter. They should still be a complete circuit even with no bulbs.
