i have a 89 coupe that wont start. we've replaced the battery cables, new battery, and the starter. When we turn the key we hear a relay on the left clicking but it doesn't start. the only way we can get it to start is by putting a wire from the battery to the starting solenoid. what do i need to fix? any ideas?

this is the members ride thread section, not a question section!!!!
So you don't have power to your starter? I'm sure theres a starter relay I would search for that and test the relay and the plug. Most relays have a diagram on the side of them of what they do. Theres pins #87, #87a, and #30, #30 switchs between #87a and #87 and it rests at #87a. Those pins should be of most interest to you.... and your thread also got moved, next time post in the right section.

I was also thinking that it could be a relay.....just because you hear it click doesn't mean it's working correctly

auto or manual? but my thought is that the safety cutout for the starter(ie park switch or clutch switch) may have lost ground... because you said non functional, and then when you jump straight to the starter, it starts... but that is just my $.02

Any luck? If not:
Check the wire that connects the alternator to the starter. My friends truck and my dads car had the same symptoms and they were both just connection issues with that wire.
