View Full Version : Rough Idling?

So Saturday my parents were driving home from Missoula and were almost out of the road construction and my mom hit one of the bumps like she had the whole way and then lost all power. I had my work tow it the 15 miles home since it is free for me. My friend came and looked at it and thought the injectors might need cleaned because there was some black on them so my dad cleaned the fuel rail and injectors today, still nothing changed. What it is doing is idling at about 500 rpms and really rough. If you slowly give it gas it will go up to about 900 and then start to cut out. It won't go any higher. Any help would be great. Don't wanna take it to a shop until we have to. It is a 1995 Nissan Altima.

Kinda a far fetched suggestion but have you checked all the fuel lines? Going over the bump may have pinched or cut them somewhere. Just a thought.

And I'm not sure about your particular vehicle, but, on my Accord, if the idle air control valve is unplugged, my car idles really low, and runs really rough.
I'd check for things that may of come unplugged, maybe a fuel filter is plugged?? Any strange smells that weren't there before? like raw fuel?? Maybe she broke her o2 sensor? that may cause rough idle, any check engine lights?

check under the car and make sure she didn't smash a fuel return line, high fuel pressure could cause the weird idle.

We replaced the inline fuel filter in the engine compartment. Nothing underneath looked different. When we unplug the fuel line from the filter and turn the key forward then back fuel comes out. Don't have any check engine lights on.

start wiggling connectors like your TPS and MAF sensor connectors... just a thought... family member had his pickup die out when a connector lost connection, but still looked connected....

o2 sensor wouldnt do that
check iacv.

first thing you should do is reset the ECU.
Next, check vacuum lines. One may have popped off when the car was jerked

i would say either a loose or missing vacuum line connection or the MAF....i would look there first....also maybe check the exhaust for a kink or something....if none of that works you may want to check IAC or EGR.....just my 2 cents.....good luck!

So reset the ECU and it displayed code 0505 which is an Air control system malfunction. Any ideas?

clean or replace or Idle Air Control Valve (IAC/IACV)

Would a faulty iacv make it do what it is doing?

Think I fixed it. Pulled the distributor apart and oil poured out. About 3 oil caps full. There was also pieces of o ring in the oil. Clean the distributor and it fired up and ran like normal. Gonna get a new one tomorrow.
