has anyone used the Nikon D40? if so what did you think of it.
2.5i has one. Great starting platform, has similar features as the D60. I would almost suggest a D50 or D70, i've seen amazing shots out of those cameras and I know you could find them relatively cheap.

I used to own a Nikon D50, it was a great intro camera. The D40 from what I have read is on the same level. A great entry level DSLR. You can't really go wrong picking any of the Nikon or Canon DSLRs. Obviously there are differences and benefits to buying some more than others, but if you are just looking to get into it, buy what you can afford. Most of the real money is spent on glass anyways.
What are you using it for? What do you expect to get out of the camera?

i want it for everything. mainly for taking pictures of cars. i want a good quality picture, something better then a point and shoot
Be prepared to spend more money on equipment then anything. You will get interest in all aspects of Photography. Happened to me. I'm looking at a lighting setup for my apartment so I can take portraits, hahaha.

Thats a good acronym. I'm going to have to start using it. Do you ever go to www.nikoncafe.com? (http://www.nikoncafe.com?) I never signed up to Nikonians because of their membership fees.
In all honesty have you ever considered a Point and Shoot, I know people cringe at those but then again no one truly understands how great a point and shoot really is. A lot of my girlfriends pictures sometimes turned out better than mine when she had her Cannon PowerShot, plus with the amount of technology they have in some of those cameras you can adjust ISO, shutter, and the aperture. People who know how to use a camera can take good pictures with a point and shoot... enuff said.

Couldn't agree more. You can find very good older technology Cannons that produce awesome pictures for decent prices on eBay.
For example, on Christmas Eve my Uncle brought his brick Cannon, lol, I asked why he brought the clunker along and said it worked really well, he straps it to airplanes for in-air shots. So, you may want to go with an indestructible camera that will last longer and not cost as much. DSLR's are going to keep dropping in price as the market is flushed with new technology.

Yea, it really all just comes down to what you want. And there are a lot of things to consider. You have to be honest with yourself on what is important to you and how far you want to go with it, and then decide on what fits best.
You can get a typical point and shoot for affordability and portability (it's always nice to slide into your pocket). You can choose a higher end point and shoot like the Canon G series (G9, G10). They are awesome cameras and include a hotshoe and raw shooting modes. But they also cost about the same as an entry level DSLR kit. So you could bump up a bit of quality to the DSLR but lose some of the convenience of a small G series. The DSLR also allows you to switch out lenses and expand on that collection, which is HUGE compared to a point and shoot. However, if you don't see yourself spending a ton of money on this hobby, then it can also be worthless.
If you just want to shoot pics here and there, any of them can do the job. If you are worried about the money, get a basic point and shoot. If you want quality in a small package with no real interest in taking it much further, then get something like the G Series. If you want room to grow and full control, get a DSLR.
Personally, I have a DSLR in the backpack and a point & shoot in my front pocket.
Don't buy a S60 waste of money, had one for like six days swapped it for a S52. The touch screen was cool, but the screen its self was grainy and most of the pics came out burrly. I never would have thought that spending less money was a better buy. I really like the Cannon Powershot series as well.

And they are upgradable so when the D100 comes out you can swap parts and make your 90 a 100.
The D90 made Lisa speechless. That moment of silence is why men everywhere give their women expensive gifts. Sure, it's measured in dollars per second but silence is golden even when it costs as much as diamonds.
20 seconds of them shutting up LOL!!

BLAHAHHAHAHAHHAA, jk the D100 is already out, but if you have the D90 you shouldnt need to upgrade for years... upon years.
