A few of us at TNT decided to get together for a short notice photo shoot on New Years Day--Easier said than done. We awoke to heavy rain which drastically limited our shooting locations. After a couple phone calls however, we decided to take a shot at it anyways. We all met up in downtown Portland and discussed our plan. We decided to shoot in a parking garage as that would give us the necessary cover from the rain and also allow us to use the lower ceilings as a bounce for the flashes.
We zig-zagged through the nearby puddle-littered streets and made our way to a parking garage that had been suggested. I started setting up lights while the guys started drying off their cars. Just as I start popping off test shots, we are greeted by the manager. We were informed in broken English that we were to be packed up and off the premises within 15 minutes. While unfortunate, we all knew that this was a possibility. This being short notice and for non-commercial purposes, we weren't exactly going to rent out the area.
We packed up and ventured back out into the rain. We checked a few more places nearby, but nothing quite fit our purposes. We rallied back up and decided to head across town to Clackamas. There was a parking garage there that we had used in the past and we knew we had a decent chance of being left alone.
We started the day with a plan to shoot in the daylight. However by the time we finally got to our location, the sun had set and night was upon us. We quick-detailed the cars and got to work. This time, instead of light stands I had the car owners hold the lights. This way, if security came by, they could hide them. While it'd still be obvious we were there to take photos, it would look far less commercial and likely afford us more freedom to do what we wanted.
Overall a frustrating day, but in the end I feel we were able to get a few decent shots.
