i just bought a nikon d40. i love it. i have alot to learn about it still but it was reasonable. right now would be a good time to buy one cuz curcuit city is having 10-30 discount on everything becuz they are going out of business. but yeah nikon is amazing. most ppl would probably suggest a d50 or d60 over the d40 but new they are more

This is an expensive hobby to get into. If your budget is $600 then there isn't much for us to recommend to you. Basically, buy a D40 kit if buying new, otherwise find the cheapest kit you can on craigslist/ebay/etc.
You have to factor in accessory costs as well. By the time you add a decent bag, a few memory cards and a tripod, you are going to be quickly approaching that $600 budget even if you find a used kit for $350.

Costco lists their prices online on www.costco.com. They are pretty good prices. I almost bought my D300 there, but ended up going to best buy as I was able to exploit a few stacked coupons bringing the price down $500 or so.
ive got an olympus E-410. One thing that sold me on it vs others, is the live view.
a Lot of digital SLR cameras do not let you see the image your looking at via the screen, but only the view finder. This one has the live view, which i like a lot. Now days i think more and more are starting to do that, but back when i bought mine. It was the only one that offered it. So if thats something you like (probably use to it since every point and shoot does it) you might want to keep that in mind.
I paid 800 bucks for my camera a while back. Included 2 leneses, the camera, a camera bag, 2 batterys and charger, 2 different sun shades, and a couple other little things. PRetty nice im very happy with it. But im sure the price on it now days has came down quite a bit.
But keep that live view thing in mind when looking!

I had always used live view as well until I got my D50. And the D50 didn't offer it, so I had to get used to the viewfinder. Now, my D300 has live view and I have honestly never used it to take a serious photo. I've played with the feature to see how it works, but that is it.
Seeing through the lens is so much quicker and more accurate than a lcd screen on the back, that I never bother. While it might be slightly off your normal "flow", I think anyone would benefit from seeing through the lens. I wouldn't let it affect your choice much.
There is also the fact that you get WAAAY more battery life not using live view.
Check out Kits or Glazers cameras beleive it or not they have some great deals.
