A .30-06 has about 30 foot pounds of free recoil and is considered about as much as an average soldier could take on a daily basis and still be able to shoot.

I have a 12 ga, chambered for 3 1/2", that makes 160 lbs.ft of free recoil, with long range duck loads. I shot it once. Oweeeeeee!!!!! Thought my thumb broke my nose. My shoulder hurt for two days.

Now I use it for grouse, with very light loads. I would never let anyone else shoot it. It's just stupid.
