View Full Version : 2006 Mustang GT "Deluxe, with leather"

It is interesting to me, that, from the factory, nowhere on this car, does it say "Mustang". I guess if you live on Earth and don't know what a Mustang looks like... well there's just no helping some people and you're probably illiterate anyway, so they put a model of a running pony on the grille to help you sound it out.
I placed my order for this car on November 4, 2005.
Two and a half hellish months, of waiting.
Received the vehicle January 18, 2006. It was snowing.
Special ordered to be black with black leather interior, Interior Upgrade Package (IUP) which has aluminum steering wheel, aluminum dash panels and door sills, all anodized (clear) and the MyColor gauges so you can change to any of 125 colors, at the touch of a button. The special order came as a result of me being picky and wanting black paint, black leather, manual tranny, IUP, no spoiler and the cheap stereo, no side airbags and the 17" wheels (not 18s). I bought this car to be as fast, from the factory, as possible, *before* I started modding. That means short wheels, fat tires, no pseudo aerodynamic crap and as light as I can make it.
Shaker 500 costs $500 and weighs 80 pounds. Pass.
Shaker 1000 costs $1200 and weighs 80 pounds. Pass.
Spoiler weighs five pounds, provides no downforce and costs you 7 MPH in top speed. Pass.
Polished 18" wheels cost $800 and cost you 1/2 a second in 1/4 mile time and four MPH. Pass.
Side airbags weigh 8 pounds per side and I forgot to order them, till it was too late, but I wouldn't have minded. Now I'm sort of glad I didn't get them. They have weight and I can't get rid of them. They also prohibit the use of A-pillar gauges....
Exterior
Black with clear coat, spoiler delete.
Interior
Interior Upgrade Package
MyColor gauges
Anodized aluminum dash
Anodized aluminum steering wheel
Custom, one-off anodized ventilated Longacre shift sphere, drilled and tapped to fit the 12x125 post.
Removed the spare tire kit, for the summers to reduce weight. Replaced with a can of Fix-A-Flat.
Suspension
Steeda lower control arms
Upper control arm not installed yet. Not enough time and it's hard :(
Spydershaft aluminum, one piece, 4" drive shaft.
17x9 Bullits
235/55-17 stock Pirelli P-Zero Nero tires.
Engine
Sct Xcal2 tuner on 91 octane race tune (slightly faster in the 1/4 mile, than the 93 torque tune but good luck finding 93 octane gas!)
BBK cold air intake
Custom welded stainless TnT pipes (cat back). Still illegal, no matter what I do.
Power steering delete belt
$27,200 and I paid it off December 5, 2006.
Going up Steptoe Butte, gently, in second gear:

That was a pair of movie references. From "Spinal Tap"... "This amp is so loud, it goes up to eleven."
From "Spaceballs"... "What's faster than light speed?"
"Ludicrous speed!!!"

Nitrous on the way.
http://www.brenspeed.com/82034.html
Plus blow down tube so I don't get an uh oh, with a mushroom cloud over it. And a window switch so I don't get a boo boo, with an oil slick under it.
One or two heat ranges cooler plugs and a dyno tune, at Shelley's in the Valley. Brian to the rescue.
Then I'll know what I am really making. Perfect time to run nitrous, right? Winter? RWD? Rain? Snow? You bet.

Yeah, I'll get it all hooked up and dynoed then not be able to touch the button again 'till like April. Turn my 13 second car into an 11 second car.
The suspension needs work. Upper control arm needs to finally go in. Panhard bar needs to be replaced (long skinny package). Driveshaft needs to be swapped out with the replacement aluminum unit with the machined flange. And as long as I'm in there, the Hurst shifter needs to go in, as long as the driveshaft is out anyway.
See what happens? It all starts with one statement... "As long as I am at it I might as well [________]."
Once the shaft is out (again), I can get to the upper control arm and the bottom of the shifter. As long as the upper control arm is coming out and I am right there anyway, I might as well rattle out the two bolts for the panhard rod.
Fuuuuuuuuuck.
As long as the car is up anyway, might as well route the nitrous tubing...
Fuuuuuuck.
It just goes on and on.

Sweet N2O dude. :)
My neighbor has an '06 GT with a 3.5" exhaust and a Saleen supercharger. That freakin supercharger is so loud. It whines 10 times louder than a Kenny Bell. I love how much torque those motors have.
JetBlack
02-21-2009, 10:04 AM
On the bottle I should be making, in the neighborhood of 520 lbs.ft. of torque. It's ridiculous. I will need waaaaaaayyyy better tires. I don't think even sticky, heated Nittos will stand up to that. I expect to be pedalling it through third and chirping fourth, at 110MPH.
I'm a little worried.

Dad got me some stickers from work, back in the day. They are round and would fit perfectly on the gas door, of the Mustang. Unfortunately, they would not fit with the rest of the car :)

Stock, the GT has about 50% more power than the V6.
It's also lighter. :)
Think about how the V6 feels in first gear.... The GT pulls like that, in third. When I start out, in second, from a stop sign, the tires spin, if I get on it too hard, at 1000 RPM.
Driving in the snow is tricky.

Didn't feel like it at all, but I went and cleaned up the outside and did a halfassed job on the engine bay. Did not do the underside of the hood. Bugs all over the front bumper. Stupid bugs.
I found out that my neighbor's tree is dying (the one you can see in the pics) and it's coming down in about two weeks. Too bad for the tree but now I won't have to shoot bottle rockets at the birds to keep them from shitting all over the car!!!!!

Cleaned the wheels a bit and sprayed the tires with sun protectant stuff that makes the water bead. Looks decent. Need to do the windshield. Somehow totally missed that. Bugs galore. Maybe I'll just take a razor blade to them in the morning.

Just got a confirmation email saying my wideband shipped. Finally can get my ZEX in the car. Good to know because there's about three weeks before the track is open for FNSR again. Plenty of time to get it installed.
I want it in the 11s, on street tires, by August.
My best run, last week was 13.50 seconds so high 11s are doable.
MUHAHAHAHA!!!!!

JetBlack
07-14-2009, 06:46 PM
125 shot.
390 hp 520 tq, to the wheels.
I'm a little scared.
With tuning I can get 420 hp but almost no torque gain. Brian describes it as feeling "like being hit from behind, by a freight train".
I can probably get online and find out what it should feel like to shit your pants and have an orgasm at the same time.

JetBlack
09-08-2009, 07:20 PM
I have considered lowering the rear an inch but then you have to tweak other things, like pinion angle, which means buying even more things, like new shocks/springs/upper control arm and panhard rod. I got tired of lowered Mustangs before I bought mine. Seeing them in person, I never got used to it. Looked like a lowered Lincoln. Not quite right. Lisa likes them lowered but I just have a hard time with it.
Brian
09-08-2009, 07:22 PM
if you drop the front and rear the same amount do you still have to do all that?
JetBlack

Yes, when the angle of the diff changes, relative to the body, you have to rotate it slightly, which you do with an adjustable upper control arm and adjustable panhard rod. To get the most out of lowering it, you need different springs/struts and some damn thing, in the front.
All for a change I don't really want, in the first place. That makes the decision easy, for me :D

Just got word from Brenspeed, that my 4.10 gears and installation kit just shipped. Should get that installed either Friday or Monday, depending on how fast they get here.
I talked to Brian, at Shelley's Automotive, in the Valley and told him I might drop the car off in the AM and he said he might be able to do both the gears and nitrous, in one day.
My expected results... 11.51sec:
YouTube- Broadcast Yourself.

4.10 Gears are in.
The old gears showed no sign of wear, at all. Had not even worn off the black coating!
So far, no noise, from the gears at all and the replacement driveshaft/flange are blissfully silent. Broke in the gears last night, with two heat cycles, per the internet instructions. The trip in to work will be more fun.
Stang
02-02-2010, 09:29 AM

JetBlack
02-02-2010, 08:57 PM
$310
Driveshaft and gears are NVH-free and I am happy. Starting in second, on dry pavement, 2000 RPM and pop the clutch and it roasts the tires, until I let off. I haven't had enough dry pavement to check but I am thinking it'll spin halfway through third and chirp fourth, at 80 MPH.
I am already thinking of nitrous and am getting excited. :yesnod:

Nitrous gets finished up Monday. Brian is doing a pretty (very!) stealthy job on the install. The only thing visible, will be the taps into the fuel rails and the tube to the fuel servos. Everything will be under something and/or painted black. Even the purge tubing will be painted black. No purple, except the injector but that's on the bottom.
And the bottle, in the trunk.
The stainless braided hoses will be wrapped in black shrink wrap to blend with the rest of the hood clutter.

Spent four hours getting the Hurst shifter in. What a PITA that was. I was removing the last nut and discovered I did not have a 10mm open end. I know I own one but....
Thank God for good location. I live two blocks from Ace Hardware and two blocks from an Auto Parts place.
Putting the new one back in was only 3/4 of a PITA.
The new shifter is tight as hell. Gears are really close together and the neutral gate is tiny. Shifting is much better. Like a toggle switch, between first gear and second. [CLICK!]

Viagra comes in bottles too and look what it does. You can have sex with your girlfriend, then go build a deck... without a hammer. Just pound those nails in with your wiener.

nitrous is scary. quite the incredible feeling, ill never forget my first time spraying. its like theres no resistance to the engine in my car in third gear. id hit it at about 3000-3500 then a 4k my tach would just dropp straight to the redline like a hammer. 60-90 in just a few seconds

What if you put it on the ground, and then drove over it super quick. Then edited the vid so that when you drove over it it ended, ha. Might look like you hit it.

Purge. The bottle heater switch will be down on the driver's side, where it won't get bonked. N20 will only be able to activate, at WOT, above 2500RPM and below whatever Brian decides is safe.
Monday will be the wideband install, connecting power lines etc. then it's done. Brian is sponsoring the install. W00t!

Everything (nitrous related) is in and wired. Tomorrow morning the wideband goes in and the gauge gets mounted, then it's onto the dyno. This project got started on March 11, 2010. It's been a long wait but hopefully the enjoyment will be worth it. I'm sure Brian and Chad will be happy to see my car leave the shop :)

Nitrous is in.
Holy sweet goodness. It gets through the gears freaking fast. Very fun.
Then I went out and lost to a modded S2000. I took off, from the light, he pulled to the right and passed me, while I was at WOT, in third gear. Holy heck, that was a fast car. We ran again, from a 65MPH roll and ran to 150. I eased away from him until fifth gear, when he went around me.
Handily.
Never got to talk to him but I'm guessing boost. Had the fattest back tires, I've ever seen, on a Honda, of any description. That car was ridiculous.

~280 hp and 300 tq, at the crank.

Nice, you're in the vid!
Those spark plugs are a little burnt, ha. Is that from the NOS?
JetBlack
06-17-2010, 07:41 AM
Either the nitrous or the plug being loose. If it leaks air, into the cylinder, on the intake stroke, it can do that kind of damage. If a little anti-seize compound gets on the electrode, it can do it too.

Pricing forged rotating assemblies and head/cam.
Looking at around 8.8:1 compression in a 1000-1500hp-rated assembly. I wonder if I'm thinking boost?
:)
~380hp, without boost and a lopey idle.
Next is to answer the question of whether I want twin turbo, by Stromberger or supercharged, by Shelley's.
