I've experimented with small amounts, never could make enough material to get enough to REALLY have fun with. But we did put a hole in 3/4" steel.

paint shops sell powdered aluminum.. iron oxide is just rust.. magnesium is in sparklers..
easy to make

We were making all of our own stuff, it was more fun that way. Grinding down aluminum, "growing" rust and magnesium strips are easy enough.

We have had customers shut down because of making thremite. We'd get parts from them that were not aluminum and we'd tell them we can't anodize magnesium and send the parts back. They'd send them to us and say "We don't make any parts out of magnesium"

A few weeks later the shop would be shut down for a huge fire caused by thermite, from a guy grinding parts on a grinder used previously to grind steel and aluminum.

Once it starts, you seriously cannot put it out. I think you can make a similar thing with just aluminum and unoxidized iron filings.

if you live out in the boones, buy some tannerite set some gas next to it and shoot it with a riffle.
or blow stuff up. it's all legal too. its what they use for target practice over long distance to see if they hit stuff.
